Philips XL Air Fryer Review – Is It Worth to Buy?

Quick Summary: This is the #1 best-selling Air Fryer on Amazon and there's tons of great reasons why it's currently on the top spot (as of Jan 2017).

It's beautiful, it's huge, and it's endorsed and used by top celebrities like Gordon Ramsay. It even landed on Oprah's favorite things for 2016.

The only cons that I can see is that it's a little bit pricey.

Design - 95%
Price - 93%
Ease of Use - 98%
Overall - 95%

But if you consider this appliance as an investment for you and your family's health, then it's just a small price to pay.

The Pros and what I liked

The upright design of the Philips Air Fryer is a deliberate design away from the traditional air fryer or deep fryer models. It's more like an espresso or coffee machine. That's one of the things I liked about it. It looks really unique in my kitchen countertop.

The name itself, "Philips XL Air Fryer" denotes that it's a bigger and larger air fryer. It can accommodate about 2 pounds of french fries and 10-14 pieces of chicken wings.

The bigger size of this air fryer allows you to cook more food in one batch allowing you to save on energy bills.

While I love the T-Fal Actifry, I believe one of it's greatest flaws is that it doesn't turn off automatically once the timer is done, thus potentially overcooking your food. Not with the Philips XL Air Fryer. Not only does it turn off automatically after the timer is done, you can also change the temperature settings of this appliance.

Being able to change the temperature of your air fryer is critical if you want to achieve different results from different temperature settings.

And last but not the least, I love it's ability to cook and make deep fried foods without using too much oil. As I've mentioned in my other article, deep frying usually uses about 3L of oil when cooking.

Things that I didn't want about this product

There's definitely tons of great reasons to choose the Philips XL Air Fryer, but there's also some disadvantages to it.

The biggest one that I've found is it's price. When compared with other air fryers, it almost cost twice as much. But if you think of the Philips XL Air Fryer as an investment for your health and for the delicious foods that you'll be able to create for your family, then you'll find out that it's actually a good investment because of it's bigger size.

With the XL size you can actually cook more food in one batch therefore saving yourself from cooking in multiple batches. Cooking less will also save you more on electrical bills.

Another thing that I didn't like about this air fryer is that there are some reports of the non-stick coating getting removed when used in a dishwasher. Although it mentions that it's parts are dishwasher safe, you might want to hand-wash the pan manually and prevent abrasive cleaners to clean your pan.

It's easy to use!

Even if you've never tried to cook on an air-fryer before, you'll be able to get started easily with the Philips Air Fryer.

If you're not a fan of digital controls, you might want to find an analog timer (dial timer) model of the Philips XL Air Fryer.

Just put your food inside the pan, attach it to the air fryer, set the temperature and timer and you're good to go.

And because this air fryer has an automated shut off setting, there's no fear of overcooking your food unlike the T-Fal which doesn't have an auto-off feature.

Top 3 reasons for choosing the Philips XL Air Fryer

If you're still thinking on what is the best air fryer to buy, check out this comparison guide again. But if you're seriously thinking about the Philips XL Air Fryer, here are 5 reasons why I liked it.

1. It automatically turns off when the timer is done

I really hate it when I burn and overcook the food that I'm preparing. But not with this air fryer. Once you've setup the time and when it ends, it will automatically shut off the appliance as well. No more overcooked chicken wings!

2. You can modify the temperature

Some foods doesn't need the "Maillard effect" (browning) and therefore doesn't need very high temperatures when cooking. You can easily change the temperature settings in this air fryer and for me that's superbly important.

3. This air fryer can cook a lot of food in one batch

Because of the XL size, this air fryer can cook more food per batch. That can translate to faster meals being cooked and lower energy bills because you don't need to use it to cook multiple batches of food.

Top Air Frying Recipes for this appliance

I wish that my air-fried french fries is enough for the recipes that I'd like to share with you but the truth is that there's more.

Among the top recipes that I'd like to share is my restaurant style chicken wings. It's very simple to prepare and cook.

Here's the ingredients

  • 1 kilo of thawed chicken wings or breast
  • 1 bottle of BBQ sauce (my favorite is Diana's BBQ sauce)
  • Zip lock for marinating

The instructions are simple. Just mix generous amounts of the BBQ sauce and the chicken wings and put them in a zip lock. Let it marinate for at least 30 mins.

Once marinated, you can then start cooking them in your Philips XL Air Fryer. Yum!
